How the Sunset Lavender Tour Works

Timed to reach the plateau as the light turns gold.

  1. Choose Your Departure City

Pick a tour leaving from Aix-en-Provence (closest), Marseille, or Nice. Each is a guided day trip with round-trip transport — no rental car or route-planning needed.

  2. Book a Date in Bloom Season

The lavender peaks roughly late June to mid-July. Book early — bloom-season weekends sell out, and the fields are harvested from around mid-July.

  3. Confirm Instantly

Pay through our secure GetYourGuide booking partner — instant confirmation by email, mobile voucher, and free cancellation on most tours up to 24 hours before.

  4. Ride to the Plateau

Meet your guide at the pickup point and travel by air-conditioned minibus to the Valensole plateau for photo stops in the fields and a working lavender-farm visit.

The Lavender Looks Best When the Crowds Leave

Why evening beats midday on the plateau.

Midday on the Valensole plateau is hot, harshly lit, and busy with cars and coaches. The fields you’ve seen in photographs — deep saturated purple, long shadows, soft warm light — are an early-morning and evening phenomenon. That’s the whole point of a sunset or dedicated photo tour: it puts you in the right field at the right hour.

A sunset tour times the drive so you reach the plateau as the light turns gold, when the rows are nearly empty and the bees have settled. Some run as relaxed Provençal picnics in the lavender; others are small-group photography outings with a guide who knows which rows catch the last light and where the classic lone-tree and distillery compositions are.

Bloom timing still rules everything — peak is late June to mid-July, with harvest from around mid-July. For a daytime alternative or a half-day option, compare the tours from Aix-en-Provence; to add a farm or winery, see private tours and farm visits.

What Travelers Say

4.9/5

"Must book trip if you are in the Aix during bloom season! The guides were so kind and informational and made me feel like I was on a photo shoot trip. They even stopped extra time for us and got home late when a beautiful full harvest moon came out. 10/10 experience!"

"I had this tour on July 4, 2025. The driving skills of the driver were very good. the visit of the family lavender/olive oil fabric could have been shorter. We visited two lavender fields the first one was very large and spectacular, but at the opposite side of the sunset. This field was not crowded at all, our group 6 persons+the driver were alone and enjoyed the endless lavender flowers to the horizon. Then we drove few minutes to the second field with the sunset at the horizon, this field was located directly near the road and was very crowded, beside the lavender, there was a sunflower field as well. The views were fantastic. We had enough time to watch the sunset, enjoy the views and take some nice pictures. The lavender in both fields were still fresh and not dried. the driver was nice, explained a lot about the area Provence, offered to snap few pictures. I recommend this tour and will not hesitate to do it again if I have the chance."
